Unusual And Fun Grandparent Nicknames

It seems that high on the list for new or soon-to-be-grandparents is to come up with their grandparent nicknames. This is no light matter. If you are lucky you’ll have that name for 30 plus years.

When I was a new grandmother I was quite young and the last name I wanted to be called was Grannie or Grandma. I’m sorry, but that was what my grandmother was called, and as much as I loved her, that was not how I saw myself.

My first grandchild was named Chantal so having absolutely no clue what I should be called, I opted for the French word for grandmother, grandmere. I remarried many years later and my new husband took the French word for grandfather – grandpere. Today, the same grandchild calls us Mer and Pere for short.

Baby Center has come up with some unusual and fun grandparent nicknames. They conducted a survey that yielded over 1400 different names. Twenty percent were highly creative and unusual.

According to Baby Center, “If your mother-in-law and your mother both claim Nana, tell them there’s no need to worry – there are more choices out there than there are cereals in a supermarket.”
