an infant or toddler decides what we will be called for the rest
our lives.

Wahoo
I am an avid Cleveland Indians fan, and at age one, Avery referred
to me as her "Grandma with the Wahoo flag" (in front of
my house). She later shortened it to "Wahoo", and the
name has stuck for all four of my grandkids!
- Paulie (OH) |
Wannie
My daughters first child started calling me Wannie Wannie. We are
not really sure why, it just came out that way when he tried to
say Granny. She now has two, they are both a little older and it
has be shortened to Wannie.
- Connie (OH) |
Welo & Wela
This is what my kids call my parents. I will soon become a grandma
and anything my grandchild calls me will be fine. It is the love
that matters. My kids other grandma is their "welita".
- Rachel (San Antonio, Texas) |
Wompa
Our Grandson calls my husband Papa, but our one granddaughter calls
him Wompa and where that came from we have no idea but think it
is cute. Our oldest granddaughter called us Gampo and Gammo. Grandkids
are precious.
- Kay (NE) |
YaYa
My mom and my husband were sitting in church together while our
Greek pastor was talking about his mom whom his children call Yia
Yia (see below). My husband and mother decided that would be a great
name for me, but more in the spirit of the YaYa Sisterhood. The
great part is my g-kids can pronounce it. The funny part is my mom
is called grandma so whenever grandma is mentioned around them they
look for my mom. Its a fun one!
The most commonly used Greek term for grandmother is yia-yia,
sometimes rendered as ya-ya. Some sources list nona for a grandmother.
