Grandparents Play an Important Role in the Lives of Teenagers

GRAND WISDOM BY CHRISTINE CROSBY

I am a mother of two young children and I wish that my mother was still alive to be actively involved in my kid’s lives and that my father lived closer to us. I believe as a parent and medical professional that this bond with grandparents is crucial for the overall development of children, particularly in the teenage years.

Recent studies conducted in Europe show that children who grow up with grandparents who are actively involved in their lives have fewer social and behavioral problems during the adolescent years. The strongest link has been shown to be between maternal grandmothers and grandchildren.

Today teens who live in single parent homes or in homes with tension between parents tend to survive better if a grandparent is around. They find it easier to speak to and confide in grandparents. They talk to grandparents about school, social problems and issues where they feel they need support. With more parents busy in their careers grandparents tend to be there more for children.

This is a major reason for the great bond. Children rely on this relationship knowing that they have someone there all the time when they need them. This is why teenagers who can bond with grandparents tend to be less rebellious and more constructive in their social relationships.
