Unique Gift Ideas for New Parents

While I know that any gift given with love is appreciated, sometimes I get weary of purchasing the same baby blankets or generic toys that I give to friends and family. I like the idea of giving something unique that someone wouldn’t usually go out and buy for themselves. It’s nice to be able to make something, like a blanket or a crafty item, but there’s not always time to do it.

Here are three unique, alternative gift ideas to give to new parents (or even parents of older children). They will appreciate your thoughtfulness and innovation!

1. A night of sleep. It sounds like such a small thing, but for a new parent, it may be the only thing they really need! Offer to come over after the baby has been put to bed and to take care of the night bottle feedings. Get specific instructions on what the parents prefer regarding bottle prep and diaper changes. Settle in with a good book or a project and send them off to bed. This gift costs you nothing but a night of sleep and is considered priceless to new parents.

It is also a huge gift to the parents of older children to have a slumber party at your house for one night. Most parents get a babysitter from time to time, but it is a rare treat to also get to wake up in a childfree house!

2. One-time maid service. It doesn’t matter how old someone’s kids are, having your house cleaned is always a treat! There should be a name brand maid service in your town that you can hire for a one-time cleaning. This is also a wonderful gift idea for anyone who is going through a difficult or stressful time and will be much appreciated.

3. Money for college. Talk about an easy gift that scores big points! The only work involved is the initial set-up at a bank of a fund to put the money into. From then on, all you need is a simple note in a card that says, “Happy birthday to Jake! We have put $50 into his college account.” Starting a college fund is something that a lot of parents neglect to do because they don’t realize how important it is or they just never get around to it. While it may not make a lot of sense to the child at the time, it will mean so much to him or her later on.
