GRAND Blessings From Our Editor, Lori Bitter
From GRAND Magazine Nov/Dec 2011
Welcome to the holiday season! 2011 has gone spinning by, and now we are approaching that golden time of year that brings us together around food, festivities and family dynamics! Look inside for new ideas on communicating with adult children, gift giving and bringing up grandchildren.
American grandparents are a powerful economic force in this uncertain economy. As MetLife’s Mature Market Institute has observed, our expenditures on basics like clothing, toys and essentials have risen 71 percent in the last 10 years. One in 10 children is living in a home headed by a grandparent, who needs resources, support and advocacy.
Our cover story illustrates the powerful connection between generations when a grandparent shares their talent and passion. Chip Taylor gave the boomer generation memorable songs such as “Wild Thing” and “Angel of the Morning.” Now he gives us the album Golden Kids Rules in collaboration with his three granddaughters.
This time of year I count my blessings and give thanks. My family is at the top of my list — especially my new little man Gabriel! I am also blessed to have colleagues who are smart, generous and make me want to come to work each day. And we at GRAND give thanks to you for meeting us here each month.
Wishing you joy,
Lori Bitter
