Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be a wolf? What would you do in the cold winter months? Where would you sleep? What would you eat?
In One Wolf Howls, writer Scotti Cohn gives children (and grandparents!) a chance to spend a year in the world of wolves. This adventurous picture book uses the months of the year and the numbers 1 through 12 to introduce children to the behavior of wolves in natural settings. The lively, realistic illustrations of Susan Detwiler complement the rhyming text and bring each month to life.

As Publishers Weekly put it: “Readers should be captivated by the animals’ resilient joie de vivre as well as by their habitats’ seasonal glories.”
Andrea Sisco wrote: “My almost four-year-old grandson and I read One Wolf Howls over and over. . . He literally howled with the wolves as we read the text in rhyme. . . This book will be on his shelf for a long time to come.” (from Armchair Interviews at http://reviews.armchairinterviews.com/reviews/one-wolf-howls).
One Wolf Howls is the result of Cohn’s life-long love of writing poetry blended with a keen interest in wolves’ personalities and behavior. “I was trying to fall asleep one night when the first lines of One Wolf Howls basically wrote themselves in my mind,” she said. “Once I had ‘One Wolf Howls in the January moonlight,’ I naturally progressed to two wolves playing in February, three barking in March, and so forth. Then I brought it full circle with 12 wolves howling in December.”
Visits to Shy Wolf Sanctuary in Florida and Wolf Park in Indiana allowed Cohn to spend some time in the company of wolves. She enjoys talking about that experience with children in presentations at schools, libraries, zoos, and nature parks.
In the back of One Wolf Howls – as with all books published by Sylvan Dell – are several pages of activities and Fun Facts that help children learn more about the subject. More than 40 pages of Teaching Activities for One Wolf Howls are available at Sylvan Dell’s website, along with eBook versions of the book in English and Spanish.
