AlertID Now Provides Free Sex Offender Alerts
Editor’s Note: As a mom and grand mom, my top priority is to keep my kids, and now my grand kids, safe. There is nothing scarier than knowing that there is a registered child sex offender near by. When I read about the following new safety tool, I thought it was well worth sharing with you.
AlertID, Inc., which provides a free online and mobile service for members and public safety officials, today announced that it provides alerts from state sex offender databases (“SODs”) to 166 million people or more than half (53%) of the US population. AlertID’s sex offender alerts are now available to residents in North Carolina, Georgia and Oklahoma in addition to states already supported including Florida, Illinois, California, Texas, New York, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Nevada, Idaho and Arizona. Additional states will be announced soon as AlertID expands across the country.
The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (“NCMEC”) reported in its Map of Registered Sex Offenders dated November 4, 2011 that there were more than 745,000 registered sex offenders in the United States. States are required by The Adam Walsh Protection and Safety Act of 2006 to provide public access to their SODs but are not required to notify residents if an offender’s information, such as his or her address, changes.
With AlertID, members can view a local map showing where registered offenders are in their neighborhoods. If an offender moves into their neighborhood or near their school, AlertID will automatically send an alert. Also included in each alert are important safety tips. If traveling to other areas, members can access the same information with AlertID’s free mobile app.
“We are committed to providing universal access to SOD information and alerts, because it helps families protect their children,” said Ken Wiles, AlertID’s Chief Executive Officer. “This information helps families make informed decisions about the security of areas in which their children live, play and go to school.”
In addition to Sex Offender alerts, AlertID offers other ways to protect children including My Family Wallet™. According to NCMEC, “One of the most important tools for law enforcement to use in the case of a missing child is an up-to-date, good-quality photograph.” Further, the photo should include an accurate description and should be updated at least every six months. My Family Wallet provides a secure way for families to store all of that information directly on their smartphones. In an emergency, My Family Wallet allows parents to send a picture and description of their child immediately to law enforcement when every minute counts. My Family Wallet provides peace of mind to parents and is just one part of AlertID’s free app.
“AlertID is a unique platform that is filling a void that exists between public safety and the community we serve. It has made a dramatic impact in helping to reduce crime and protect families by directly involving the community in policing efforts” Chris Perry, Director for the Nevada Department of Public Safety.
The information contained in the SODs is only to be used to protect families, and AlertID members determine whether they want to receive the alerts and for what geographic areas.
