CBS targets Teen Girls With Victoria’s Secret Special
By Tim Winter – President of Parents Television Network
While other networks are showing How the Grinch Stole Christmas, Frosty the Snowman, and other holiday favorites, CBS has established its own Christmas tradition. Since 2002, the network has aired the sleazy Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show in the weeks leading up to Christmas. This year was no exception, with the program airing this past Tuesday, December 4th, at 10:00 p.m. Eastern – only 9 :00 p.m. Central/Mountain.
Worse, in recent years the hour-long underwear ad has increasingly targeted teens and young girls. Last year, Victoria’s Secret lingerie models dressed in a fashion evocative of childhood, while toting accessories like lollipops and teddy bears. And this year, the fashion show featured musical guest Justin Bieber, who is wildly popular with teen and pre-teen girls.
Nicole Clark, a former model who devotes herself to battling the sexualization of girls by the fashion industry, blasted the program, stating,”It is disturbing to see Victoria’s Secret is now targeting younger and younger demographics…The practice some corporations use of applying the rule “sex sells” should not apply to our children.”
