By Luis E. Martinez, DDM
A few months ago, I had the privilege of meeting a few of our wounded soldiers at an event. Listening to their experiences, I felt inadequate as they spoke of losing their sight, limbs, and loved ones. I was amazed at their strength to continue on with their lies and at their patriotism.
While I was pondering how I could help, I ran into the ceramist I work with, who was at the same event. She knew one of the speakers and introduced me to Cathy, who had lost her vision while serving our country and happened to need some dental work. It was as if God or fate had put us all in that room at that time.
For the first time in my 28 years of practice, I would be creating a beautiful, healthy smile for someone who wouldn’t be able to see the results. Yet, I knew my work would give this brave soldier even more confidence as she makes her presentations for veteran’s causes.
Being touched by such a special person as Cathy and her loyal four-legged companion, Angel, reminded me of the importance of a few things we too often neglect to do: Stop to enjoy the simple moments that make life worth living. Cherish time with loved ones. Be grateful for all we have and for the country we are privileged to call home. Thank our soldiers for the noble work they do and the sacrifices they make on our behalf.
