Nana-to-Be Showers

How to host a perfect party for a new grandmother

Baby showers for new grandmothers are gaining popularity among modern mimis. Never mind that they’re a point of contention for folks who view them as yet another commercialization of a sacred event, or scene-stealing ploy of attention-seeking boomers, and tacky “gimme gift grab.”

Becoming a grandparent is a significant, life-changing event. Why wouldn’t a nana-to-be want to celebrate this joyous occasion with her special peeps? Shopping for all those must-haves of the go-to grammie can be daunting and pricey. Why wouldn’t the new g’ma’s BFFs want to help out by throwing her a shower?

To host a rockin’ nana shower that won’t ruffle feathers, just follow these five simple rules:

  1. Only for a first grandchild: Because once you have the first pack-n-play, high chair, and bouncer, you’re pretty much set!
  2. Don’t host your own: Did we even need to say this? We don’t really need to say why, do we?
  3. Invite the mom-to-be: Ask before settling on a date, and don’t be upset whether she says yes or no. If she says yes, work around her schedule. You might even ask what baby items she’d like to have at Grandma’s house or what Grandma needs.
  4. Make sure the new mommy has her own shower: That doesn’t mean you need to throw her one. Just check to make sure her friends, siblings, coworkers, or someone else is honoring Mommy, too—and first, ideally.
  5. No double-dipping: Don’t invite the same people on the new mom’s baby shower guest list to the new gran’s shower. Most will not appreciate feeling obligated to go to two showers and to get two gifts for one baby (or set of multiples).

Keep it simple. Make it personal. And celebrate!
