It sounds silly, but my grandkids and I recently had the most fun we’ve had in a long time doing none other than singing in the rain. Okay, we weren’t actually in the rain, but during a particularly heavy storm we stepped out onto the porch and created our own concert. The rain was so loud that we sang at the top of our lungs without disturbing any neighbors.
Starting out, we came up with as many songs as we could that involve some sort of water. Eventually, we were singing any song we could think of. Afterwards, we went inside and found (on YouTube.com) the actual theme song clip from Singin’ in the Rain with Gene Kelly, Donald O’Connor and Debbie Reynolds. It was one of those days that I know my grandkids will remember for a long time, and they are already coming up with new songs for us to sing the next time we have bad weather!
Here’s a silly song you can sing with your grandkids “in the rain” or at any time:
Singin’ in the Rain (to the tune of the original song)
(Sing and sway.)
I’m singin’ in the rain
Just singin’ in the rain
What a glorious feelin’
I’m…
(Then chant the following while shimmying.)
Cha-cha-cha-cha-cha-hey-hey!
Cha-cha-cha-cha-cha-hey-hey!
(Then the leader shouts:)
Arms out!
(Kids repeat as they put their arms out.)
Arms out!
(Continue by singing the song again while everyone’s arms are out. Each time, the leader will shout out a new motion to add and maintain while singing the song. So, the second time through, the leader will shout out as kids repeat, “Arms out!” “Arms out!” “Thumbs up!” “Thumbs up!” and so on. Here are all of the additional motions.)
Thumbs up!
Elbows in!
Knees bent!
Toes in!
Booty out!
Tongue out!
(By the end, everyone should look pretty silly and be laughing pretty hard!)
