Poll Reveals What Children Want To Be When They Grow Up: New research by a money saving website in the US has uncovered the top 10 career aspirations of children throughout America aged 10 and under, with ‘superhero’ and ‘celebrity’ topping the list. According to the poll, 61% of parents think TV programmes influence their child’s ambitions, whilst 65% want their children to grow up and follow in their footsteps.
A new study by a money saving website in the US has revealed the top 10 career aspirations of children aged 10 and under throughout America, with ‘superhero’ topping the list. www.CouponCodesPro.com conducted the study as part of ongoing research into the parenting experiences of US adults; with children’s discount codes amongst the most popular on the site. 3,910 American citizens, all of whom stated they were a parent with a child aged 10 or under, were quizzed about their children’s futures.
Initially all respondents were asked ‘Does your child ever talk about the future?’ and told to take into account serious and silly conversations, to which 82% of parents said ‘yes’. When asked what topics of conversation they had with their children regarding their future, the most common conversation starters were ‘future careers’ (62%), ‘goals and targets’ (21%) and ‘future families’ (9%).
Following on from this, all respondents were then asked ‘Has your child ever told you what they want to be when they grow up?’ to which 100% of the parents said ‘yes’. All parents were then provided with an extensive list of possible career options for their children and told to select all of the paths that their youngster(s) had expressed an interest in (or they could write their own answers if they didn’t appear on the list). Once all of the results were collated, the top 10 things that children want to be when they grow up were revealed to be as follows:
1. Superhero – 37%
2. Celebrity – 36%
3. Doctor – 33%
4. President of the United States – 29%
5. Teacher – 24%
6. Prince/Princess – 23%
7. Astronaut – 18%
8. Chef – 16%
9. Police officer – 15%
10. Santa – 10%
All parents were asked ‘What do you think influences your child’s future ambitions?’ to which the most common results were ‘TV shows’ (61%) and ‘movies’ (30%).
65% of the respondents said they would like their children to grow up and follow in their career footsteps, in terms of picking the same occupation. Furthermore, 89% of the total respondents said they wanted their children to be ‘more successful’ than they had been.
Nick Swan, CEO of CouponCodesPro.com, said the following: “Children are heavily influenced by what’s going on around them and it’s easy to see why TV and movies contribute towards their future ambitions. Parents should try to encourage their children’s imaginations and allow them to believe they can be whatever they want to be when they’re older. Chances are, they won’t grow up to be Santa Clause or a Princess, but they’ll grow up to be someone that you’re proud of, whether they follow in your footsteps or not.”
METHODOLOGY NOTE: The survey was sent via email to the respondents and conducted over the course of 7 days. All respondents were registered to an opt-in database. The margin of sampling error for the complete set of weighted data is +/- 3.3 percentage points.
