Sex and Age: It Gets Better As You Go Along

Sex and Age: It Gets Better As You Go Along

Despite what advertising, TV and movies tell us, you don’t have to be young and beautiful to have great sex. Especially, you don’t have to be young. Although the young and smug love to think they know everything about sex (“Old people having sex? Ewwwww!”), all the evidence says that they haven’t got a clue when compared to the older crowd.

According to a study done by Swedish researchers (of course, it’d be Sweden!) published by the British Medical Journal, an increasing number of 70 year olds are having good sex and a lot more of it. Plus, there’s good news for older women – the ladies are lovin’ it: sexual satisfaction in women increases with age.

Nils Beckman and colleagues from The University of Gothenburg studied the sex lives of 1,500 people aged 70 and found that sexual activity increased over their last 30 years. The number of women reporting high sex satisfaction increased. However, the news isn’t so great for guys: they may be having more sex but their satisfaction decreased. Beckman thinks this is because it’s now more acceptable for men to acknowledge that they might have sexual troubles, like erectile dysfunction.

It's fun being "elderly" too!
It’s fun being “elderly”!

The study concludes that “most elderly people consider sexual activity and associated feelings a natural part of later life.”

And the American women speak up…

Not to be outdone by the Swedes, researchers from the University of California San Diego and the San Diego Healthcare System (and you knew it’d be California!) studied a group of 806 women median age 67, all living in a planned community near San Diego. And we’re planning to move there immediately. Half the women with a partner had been sexually active in the last 4 weeks. Of those 67.1% had an orgasm always or most of the time. Oddly enough, the oldest and the youngest of the group said they had orgasms most often.

Get older and the sex gets better.

But, partner or not, 61% of all the women were satisfied with their overall sex lives, and the percentage of sexually satisfied women increased as they got older. Whatever the reason, it’s just like we always said: great sex can continue for a lifetime!
