Holiday Trends Savvy Grandparents Need To Know

Holiday Trends You Need To Know from Fat Brain Toys

The turkey has been cooked, eaten, and the leftovers are history. Next up, the December holidays – the most wonderful of the year – and grandparents are playing a bigger role than you might think.

  • Grandparents’ spending power is considerable — $52 billion[1] on grandkids annually, to be exact — and will play a huge part in this holiday season. Impressive to note, 80 percent plan to purchase at least two gifts per grandchild and two-thirds are planning to spend between $50-$200 on holiday gifts per grandchild this season.

  • What’s even more interesting is that 96 percent of grandparents don’t plan to buy their grandchildren tech toys; and more than half (56%) say it’s because they want their grandkids to get away from tech screens, and are focusing on gifts that inspire interactive learning and play.

This movement toward long-lasting, screen-free toys is so important that grandparents are willing to spend more money on gifts to help grandkids build important skills, strengthen STEM learning, or even just get them outside to play!

But as we all know, the holiday season is not just about gifts — it’s about family and traditions, of course. Over 1,200 grandparents were surveyed, and they’re working to preserve family traditions.

Almost half of families are no longer heading over the river, nor through the woods, nor do they end up at grandma’s house for the holidays. A large portion of grandparents now travel to visit their families — a notable shift in long-held traditions.

While over half surveyed (53%) noted that some holiday traditions have changed or been entirely lost over time, 86 percent of grandparents still said they have holiday traditions that are important to them.

As another holiday season comes and goes, it’s important to cherish each family moment from gift giving to holiday meals and celebrate the past as we head into a new year that’s full of possibilities.

As you peruse Fat Brain Toys, you may find something missing. In fact, if you’re accustomed to the toy selection found at most stores, you may find lots of items missing.
