Stories For My Grandchild

Stories for my grandchild

BY SUSAN ‘HONEY’ GOOD

Based on my personal feelings, I am convinced there is an unspoken bond between a grandmother and her grandchild. I loved and admired my grandfathers, as I am sure you did, but I loved and had a bond with my grandmothers. I admired them. I listened to the tone of their voice and their laugh. I noticed their gait, I copied values and mannerisms, style of dress and even the way they decorated their table for the holidays. There was a tie, a link, an unsaid pledge, a bond of love between us. They are forever a part of who I am. We are descendants on the same tree of life.

“What touched me as I got further and further into my writing was the bond I was beginning to feel with grandmothers I would never meet…”

From generation-to-generation, we are now the grandmothers. We share that same bond with our grandchildren as we did with our grandmothers.

And for those reasons and many more, when an email popped up in my inbox from Abrams Books in New York inviting me to author a book, I felt the following emotions; disbelief and shock, excitement and wonderment, appreciation and gratitude and an OMG!, I am going to be the author who will have the privilege to write the prompts that will enable a grandmother to write her life story for her grandchildren. Suddenly, I was able to reel in the enormity of my task, the importance of this little jewel, Stories for my Grandchild. It hit me in a magical way and I was over the top, elated because I was giving back to grandmothers around the world the ability to answer in their handwriting the story of their life and the history of their family tree and gift this heirloom journal to their grandchildren. Stories for my Grandchild is a keepsake to pass down from generation to generation.

What touched me as I got further and further into my writing was the bond I was beginning to feel with grandmothers I would never meet because we are all co-authors of Stories for my Grandchild. How special. How meaningful for me.

The book is completed. How do I feel? As I told my editor, who has become my friend, “Writing this little jewel and working with you has been the most rewarding experience I have had since I started, Honey Good.”
