Becoming Jesse

Celebrating the Everyday Magic of Childhood

Author: Patsie McCandless

Reviewer: Jeanette Perkins aka Beeba

rainbow heartThis is a whimsical story of magic and hope. Jesse O’Neil is a six year old orphan boy being raised in New York City in the 1950’s. He lives with his grandmother Dearie and Uncle Conor. Jesse is obsessed with finding his “disappeared” maternal grandmother that he elegantly names Lady Jessica.  Through everything – neighborhood potlucks, disagreements with his best friend Billy, kidnapping danger, the death of a loved one, and endless postponements of his trip to fulfill his quest to find his grandmother – Jesse views life through the lens of love.

Charming words and phrases like Baby Grand (Dearie’s nickname for Jesse), Jigger-jolly (fun surprise) and Zippity-pip (vey fast) are sprinkled throughout the book. These words may not be in the dictionary but enhance the story immensely.

“A snow fall, much like your life, is made up of billions upon billions of glitters.”

Becoming Jesse celebrates the magic of childhood and hope for the future. It is encouraging and endearing. This book will spark your imagination. Maybe you will be inspired to go on an adventure with your grand. Celebrate the everyday love of childhood as you read this book.
