Camp Grandma : Next Generation Grandparenting – Beyond Babysitting
Author: Marianne Waggoner Day
Reviewer: Jeanette Perkins aka Beeba
Camp Grandma is a great place to be spoiled, eat ice cream and stay up late. Also, it can be filled with teachable moments. Certainly, as grandparents we all have gifts to share. Marianne Waggoner Day was once a highly successful businesswoman. She later began spending more time with her four grandchildren and established Camp Grandma. She introduced her grands to a variety of life lessons and tools that would serve them well in school and beyond. Some examples:
- Public Speaking
- Teamwork
- Writing Your Resume
- Meet Your Ancestors
- Identifying Your Strengths
- Valuing Your Reputation
Each chapter in Camp Grandma contains detailed instructions on the goal, time required, what you’ll need and tips. There are other topics that could be covered based on your own areas of expertise. Along the way, Day discovered many things about herself and her grandchildren.

About the author:
As a young wife and stay-at-home mother, Marianne Waggoner Day was a “typical” June Cleaver housewife of the ’60s and ’70s―until her divorce necessitated “getting a job.” She started her career in sales and was promoted to various management positions. Ultimately, she became president of retail services for CBRE, where she led the largest commercial retail real estate practice in the world. Day was the first woman to earn a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 100-year-old company. Ten years ago, she elected to step down from her corporate role while continuing to consult with former clients and coach high-performing business professionals. Now in retirement, she has come full circle―from having her picture in the Wall Street Journal to spending much of her day caring for her grandchildren.
