Galapagos Rules! – Postcards from Poppies
Author: Lavelle Carlson
Age range: 3 to 11
Reviewer: Jeanette Perkins aka Beeba
Most people will never get to visit the Galapagos Islands off the coast of Ecuador. But Lavelle Carlson takes us along on a voyage through the islands by using postcards from Poppies (a grandfather) to his Young Explorer (grandchild). The postcards share fun facts about the islands and the wildlife found there. Each postcard has a corresponding picture from the author’s personal collection. The title of the book alludes to the fact that the Galapagos Islands are not only a cool place to visit, there are also many rules in place to assure the wildlife living there are protected. You and your grand will learn about blue-footed boobies, giant tortoises and large iguanas.
The author is offering to send a signed (by Poppies and the author) postcard to your child with the purchase of a book. To receive a Galapagos Rules! postcard signed by “Poppies” and the author, Lavelle Carlson, email info@slpstorytellers.com and attach a copy of your book purchase receipt. Please do not give your child’s name for security purposes. You will write in the child’s name when you receive the postcard in an envelope.

Carlson has also published other books aimed at teaching children language skills. Here are two of her offerings. I Am Not Sleeping! is a book written in English and Spanish and is meant to be sung with a child to the tune of “Are You Sleeping”. There is also a table of English and Spanish verb conjugations in the back to aid parents or grandparents who are trying to teach a child a new language. The Book of If for Children uses pictures and imagination to show children that words that sound very close can have vastly different meanings. Each page has an example of a misunderstanding designed to teach a child to listen for phonetic differences and rhymes.
