My Grandma and Me
Author: Mina Javaherbin Illustrator: Lindsey Yankey
Age range: 4-8
Reviewer: Jeanette Perkins aka Beeba
My Grandma and Me is a true story of a young girl, Mina, growing up in Iran and her grandmother, who lives with them. Mina adores her grandma and imitates everything she does.
“In this big universe full of many moons, I have traveled and seen many wonders, but I have never loved anything or anyone the way I love my grandma.”
Beginning with the first Muslim prayer of the day (namaz), Mina copies what Grandmas does. They spend their days visiting Annette who lives next door with her own grandmother. The two little girls and the two grandmothers are both best friends. Since Annette and her grandmother are Christian, the story illustrates how neighbors with vastly different cultures can get along.
This book introduces young grands to some of the customs of Iran, including the holy month of Ramadan. It also explains the chador head covering worn by Iranian women. But Mina is more interested in using a chador as a magical cape to fly to outer space.
You will love reading this story to your grands. No matter what country you live in, the feelings between grandparents and grandchildren are universal. The cozy illustrations complement the story. You will feel like you are right there in Mina’s apartment. They showcase the obvious adoration between the young girl and her grandma.
