I Miss My Grandpa (even though I’ve never met him)
Author/Illustrator: Jin Xiaojing
Age range – 4 to 8
Reviewer: Jeanette Perkins aka Beeba
I Miss My Grandpa is written from the author’s experience. Her Grandpa died before she was born but she longs to know more about him. She asks her Grandma what Grandpa looked like. By sharing physical features her mom, aunts, uncles and cousins share with Grandpa, the young girl imagines her Grandpa’s face. She misses the man she never knew.
“I have never met my grandpa. But I always felt like he’s here with me.”
Use this book as a springboard to talk to your grand about a grandparent they did not have the opportunity to meet. As a bonus, there is a Mandarin Chinese translation of the text at the end of the book. The illustrations were done in many different mediums and range from child-like colored pencil drawings to bright oil paintings, all blending well with the narrative.
