How to Raise a Reader

Authors: Pamela Paul and Maria Russo

Reviewer: Jeanette Perkins aka Beeba

I was always an avid reader. When my mother said “lights out” I turned the flashlight on under the covers and continued reading long into the night. But not all children love to read. How to Raise a Reader is a great guide for parents and grandparents who are not avid readers or who may need help to get on the right track with the kids. The book is divided into four age groups – baby and toddler, emerging and independent reader, middle grade, and teenage reader. For each age group, there are several topics covered:

  • What you need to know at this age.
  • What to look for in books.
  • What to be wary of.
  • Book picks for the age group.

How to Raise a Reader would be a nice gift for new parents. For a grandparent, it is a helpful guide for turning your grand into a lifelong reader. In addition to the books recommended in each chapter, section five has an extensive list by theme and reading level. A great source for gift giving ideas. Reading is a vital skill in this world. Let’s give our grands a love of books.
