A Season Of Hope And Resolve For Gun Safety

A season of hope and resolve for gun safety

Co-founders of Grandparents United for Gun Safety

During this holiday season, we send our wishes to all for happy times spent with family and friends, especially our grandchildren. No matter your holiday traditions, it is the ideal time to make memories while focusing on what is meaningful to you.

While many of us are fortunate to be counting our blessings, it is essential to think about many others who will not be as lucky as we are, with happy memories and family to share them with.

As of November 9th, the Gun Violence Archive reports we have lost 36,192 people to gun violence due to homicides, suicides, and preventable, unintentional shootings in 2023. Sadly, we anticipate there will be more by year’s end.

Gun violence and crime incidents are collected/validated from 7,500 sources daily – Incident Reports and their source data are found at the gunviolencearchive.org website.

Data Sources Verified: November 26, 2023

Each person who died had a story, and each now leaves a void in their loved ones’ lives. Too many families will have an empty seat at their holiday table. Too many people will miss getting a phone call or text. And too many people will be left with only the memories of the person they lost.

While the statistics are alarming, there is good news: the American public is far ahead of their local elected officials and those in Congress in their support for common-ground gun reform. We believe establishing the White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention will help us succeed in getting important legislation passed.

What can we do to support their efforts? We can recognize we each have the power to assert ourselves by using our voices and our votes to demand Universal Background Checks, “Red Flag” laws, Safe Storage bills, and other legislation to keep us safe.

We do not have to accept that the scope of gun violence is too big and too hard to address. It is not normal, and we can do something about it. Gun deaths in our country far exceed those of any other industrialized nation, and the data show that stronger gun laws lead to fewer gun deaths.

The end of the year is the ideal time to resolve to act and get involved. Our families, our communities, our grandchildren, and the families who have lost loved ones to firearm deaths are counting on us to act to keep them safe.

Elected officials work for us – and we must RESOLVE to make them accountable. It is our fervent HOPE that you will add your voice to ours and speak out for common-ground gun reform. Our country needs you!
