Libido, An Unexplored Energy?

Libido?

BY CHRISTINE CROSBY

There’s a lot being said—and learned—today about longevity, health, and sex after 60. When I was growing up, the very idea of sex after 60 was never spoken about, even in private. Thank goodness sex after 60 has finally “come out of the closet.” Yes, even for grandparents.

Men have had a big head start, since most medical research to date has focused on men. Despite the fact that women live longer—and, small side note, increasingly control much of the wealth—women’s health care has taken a back seat, especially when it comes to reproductive health.

When Viagra hit the market in 1998, men were overjoyed. Known chemically as sildenafil, the blockbuster drug was originally developed by Pfizer scientists researching treatments for angina and high blood pressure, and it went on to become one of the most famous and rapidly adopted medications in history.

But what about women? Oh yeah—menopause takes care of that, dampening libido for many women along with a host of other difficult symptoms. Fortunately, hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is finally getting the attention—and research—it deserves, and we’ll be hearing much more about it. HRT isn’t a new “discovery” — hormone replacement therapy has been around since the mid‑20th century; what’s newer is the renewed research and de-stigmatization after years of women being scared off it post-2002.

Meanwhile, I was sent a book to review with a rather tantalizing title: Libido, an Unexplored Energy: An Exploration Through Energy Healing, written by Nicolas Mérand.  I found this book to be another way to look at our sex drives.

What if there’s more to libido than a simple driver of human desire? In this book, Mérand offers a bold take on this vital energy that drives us all. Blending personal experience with in-depth psychological analysis, he explores the lesser-known power of libido beyond its more familiar functions. Through the lens of energy healing, Mérand reveals how this often misunderstood and overlooked force can serve as a lever for inner transformation, healing, and balance. Part academic dissertation, part introspective quest, the book invites readers to take a fresh look at their inner strengths and open a door to greater self-awareness. Combining science and personal experience, it takes readers on a riveting journey to the core of human energy.
